Customer Spotlight: CUES at Florida Atlantic University Uses Branded Skins for VR Headsets
According to research from the Center for Urban and Environmental Solutions (CUES) at Florida Atlantic University (FAU), sea levels in South Florida are projected to rise to exponential levels. The projections show that levels will rise 10 to 17 inches by 2040, up to 51 inches by 2070, and up to 136 inches by 2110.
CUES developed a virtual reality experience that demonstrates how the rising sea levels will impact their local communities and also solutions that can prevent catastrophe. MightySkins had the exciting opportunity to work with CUES by donating FAU-branded skins for their VR headsets.
We interviewed Serena Hoermann, the Assistant Director at the Center for Urban and Environmental Solutions at FAU, to learn more.
Can you tell us about yourself?
I serve as assistant director at a research center at Florida Atlantic University, the Center for Urban and Environmental Solutions (CUES) within the Department of Urban and Regional Planning.
What is FAU's Center for Urban and Environmental Solutions?
Established in 1972, the Center for Urban and Environmental Solutions (CUES) is dedicated to helping communities and decision-makers plan for urban and environmental issues through partnerships, education, and research throughout Florida and beyond.
How are you using VR technology at CUES?
The VR helps people see how storm surges, king tides, and sea-level rise could impact public parks. We also show adaptation solutions that could help mitigate flooding impacts during our interactive 10-minute VR experience.

What has been the public’s reaction to your VR experience?
People are kind of amazed that they feel they are there, where the flooding is, or in the blimp hovering over the parks. They are excited about expanding our parks with nature-based solutions to mitigate flooding impacts.
We’ve heard Mayor Keith James has seen your presentation!
Yes! The mayor is excited about finding a way that residents can understand flooding impacts and provide input on which solutions they think are best. The VR experience continues to be used at community engagement events with our partners.
Are there any exciting projects coming from CUES in 2023?
We have a mobile phone app (U-Ride) that helps students navigate to campus. It will be in the app stores soon.
