What We Know About the Apple iPhone 12

Since the first iPhone was unveiled back in June 2007, Apple fanatics alike have waited with bated breath for each new iteration. Every year, Apple delivers with a new set of iPhones that appeal to hardcore and casual smartphone users alike.

With the change of the seasons comes yet another iPhone launch — this time in the form of the iPhone 12. This exciting device is poised to once again shake up the smartphone market with features and functions that range from practical to rarely used.

While some aspects of the new lineup will remain under wraps until it's finally launched, several iPhone 12 leaks have given us a taste of what is to come. Keep reading for a glimpse at what we know so far about this newest iPhone and its exciting features.

The 2020 iPhone 12 Lineup

Top iPhone 12 rumors suggest that the smartphone will come in many forms, including its standard model and a few notable upgrades. The ideal iPhone for your situation will largely depend on your size preference, your battery needs, and your budget. All of the current models come packed with features that you will quickly come to love, although some go above and beyond with advanced capabilities.

iPhone 12

The base model of Apple's flagship device, the iPhone 12 is expected to start at $649 when it's released in October. Comparable to last year's iPhone 11, this price is pretty standard for an entry-level iPhone. It's a welcome piece of news for cash-strapped consumers who like the idea of owning an iPhone but aren't willing to spend a lot.

Featuring a 5.4-inch Super Retina OLED screen and 4 GB of RAM, the iPhone 12 will do everything the 11 did — but better. The most notable change? The entry-level iPhone 12 will be the smallest iPhone offered in several years. Some people might not appreciate the smaller size, but many will be thrilled by this change of pace, given the massive size of today's smartphones. The phone will also receive a makeover, with flatter sides replacing the rounded edge of the iPhone 11.

iPhone 12 Max

Featuring a larger 6.1-inch screen and a higher capacity battery, the iPhone 12 Max is a slight step up from the standard iPhone 12. This incremental improvement costs an extra $100, but may be worthwhile for those not enthused about the small size of the smaller version.

iPhone 12 Pro

Apple aficionados will likely gravitate towards the Pro model of the new iPhone. While it may contain the same screen as the Max, the Pro ups the ante with three rear cameras, stainless steel body construction, and massive storage space.

iPhone 12 Pro Max

Batting cleanup in Apple's iPhone 12 lineup is the Pro Max, which features everything the Pro offers but kicks it up a notch with a 6.7 inch OLED screen and beefed-up battery. While the iPhone 12 is Apple's smallest offering in years, the 12 Pro Max is the biggest iPhone ever. It will take up a lot of room but can also be expected to provide crystal clear visual quality for streaming, gaming, social media, and more.

New iPhone Design Rumors

iPhone design is always on the cutting edge in terms of style and intuitive design — and the new 12 lineup appears to follow in the same footsteps of its predecessors. More specifically, the 12 looks to be taking a cue from the design of the old iPhone 4, with a square-edged frame decked out in stainless steel.

Other rumored changes to the design include a relocated SIM card tray, a power button moved slightly lower, and larger camera lenses. The 12 Pro Max is poised to be quite a bit thinner than its iPhone 11 compadre, which, combined with the enormous 6.7 inch OLED screen, will make the 12 Pro Max look and feel like the most beautiful iPhone ever assembled.

OLED Screen Technology

Another component that will make the new iPhone 12 lineup feel like a step up from the last generation: Apple's switch over to OLED screens. Anyone who's seen a wall full of HDTVs at a big box retailer knows that OLED looks sharper and more vibrant than the now "old school" LCD screens of the past. At long last, this technology is coming to the iPhone.

Interestingly, three of the four iPhone 12 screens are supplied by Samsung — Apple's chief rival in the smartphone space. These new Samsung Display screens will be used on the 12, Pro, and Pro Max, with the 12 Max getting a 6.1-inch screen provided by BOE/LG. Regardless of where the screens originate, they'll look incredible. Their sleek appearance will be that much more impressive combined with the gorgeous aluminum and stainless steel frames that house them. Unfortunately, the much-anticipated ProMotion Technology featuring silky-smooth 120Hz refresh rates likely won't make the cut for this generation of iPhones.

Smile For The (Dual Rear) Camera

Much of the marketing that surrounds an iPhone launch centers around the phone's fantastic camera. The release of the iPhone 12 will be no exception.

In the never-ending smartphone camera arms race, Apple would be more than safe sticking with the impressive setup included in the iPhone 11, but where is the fun in that? The 12 series will feature a dual rear camera for the 12 and 12 Max, with the Pro and Pro Max getting an extra camera on the back as well as improved telephoto lens features. Rumors suggest that the Pro Max will also receive enhanced image stabilization features that can be used with the ultra-wide angle lens — something never before seen in an iPhone.

Mega GB Storage Space

With users taking thousands of pictures and filming videos in ultra-high definition, smartphone storage space is more important than ever. Of course, Apple has never skimped on storage. This year's new iPhone series should have more than enough to keep amateur photographers and videographers happy.

The iPhone 12 and 12 Max will offer up to 256 GB of storage, with the Pro and Pro Max doubling it to achieve 512 GB. As some phone brands opt for less storage space and more cloud-based options for uploading and downloading pictures, it's nice to see Apple sticking with a traditional storage setup.

5G for Faster Speeds

Much has been made about the new 5G wireless network, for better or worse. Regardless of what may be said about its non-cellular network uses, there is no doubt that 5G blows 4G out of the water in terms of speed.

All four versions of the iPhone 12 should come equipped with Qualcomm's X55 5G chip, which could theoretically result in 7Gb/s download speeds. In reality, speeds will be lower. Despite this, 5G will offer a noticeable improvement over the old 4G network of the past.

New A14 Chip for Better Performance

Phone processors are incredibly complex — the A14 chip housed within the iPhone 12 is no exception. While many concrete details aren't yet known about this new chip, it's expected to give the iPhone 12 series up to a 20 percent increase in performance over the iPhone 11.

The included 4 GB of Ram in the 12 and Max phones and 6 GB in the Pro and Pro Max will be more than enough to keep every app humming and productivity suites operating smoothly.

Lightning Power Supply

Apple's decision to lean into their proprietary Lightning cables and connectors has always been a sticky subject with tech fans. The iPhone 12 isn't going to change anyone's opinion on the topic. It's rumored that Apple will not include a power adapter in the box, but instead pack in a USB-C to Lightning cable for charging.

Battery life on these new phones is expected to be similar to that of the iPhone 11 series, despite slightly larger batteries being included. Due to the increase in processing power, gains in battery life are unavailable for this generation.

iPhone 12 Release Date and Price

Apple is known for launching new devices in the fall. For this reason, iPhone rumors suggest that the new series will be released in October 2020. While some were initially worried that COVID would get in the way of the release, the latest whispers suggest that an autumn timeline remains probable.

As mentioned before, the base model of the iPhone 12 is expected to retail for $649, falling in line with other phones in this category. Taking a step up to the 12 Max will cost an extra $100, pricing that particular phone at $749. The premium models of the iPhone 12 step up in cost quite a bit, with the 12 Pro rumored to check in at $999 and the Pro Max demanding a hefty sum of $1,099.

The Apple iPhone 12 may be a major investment, but based on its extraordinary features and design, it's one worth making. That being said, it may be worth your while to seek extra protection for your phone. The last thing you need is to damage this amazing device! And while it will look gorgeous on its own, it's possible to further enhance its appearance with custom skins and wraps. These can be designed to perfectly fit all editions of the phone while adding plenty of flair.
